Baccarat Casino: What You Need To Know

With a history that dates back to the 1400s, it is little wonder baccarat is one of the most popular games among casino players around the world. And Australian players are catching on fast, particularly with the introduction of baccarat online.

The game was first created by a man called Felix Falguiere, with the term “baccara” meaning zero.

It is said that the original Italian game was based on an Etruscan legend, where a young blonde virgin had to throw a dice with nine sides, and the result would dictate her fate. Throwing lower than a 6 and she would be sent to the sea to drown. A 6 or 7 and she would be able to live, but could not take part in any religious events; and an 8 or a 9 and she would become a priestess. No one knows what the result was, or why she had to do this, but it led to the creation of one of the world’s most popular games, Baccarat.

It wasn’t long before France caught on to the game. They changed the name to Chemin de Fer and it was one of King Charles VIII’s favourite games to play. From France, it moved across the channel to England, where Ian Fleming learned to play it; and subsequently, James Bond – possibly the world’s most famous baccarat players, was born (fictionally)!

Bond, James Bond. Whether it was Bond who took it around the world in film, or other players who managed to bring their knowledge of the game to countries like Australia – today, it’s one of the most popular games for Australian players, particularly with the introduction of online gambling. And regardless of if you’re at one of the big casinos or sitting on your couch; there’s no doubt this popular game brings an abundance of fun as well.

What is Baccarat Casino game?

Baccarat casino is a pretty easy game to play, which makes it even more popular among young Aussies who want to feel as though they are getting a “James Bond” kick. There aren’t a lot of rules and the odds can be quite good.

Basically you want to bet on the “person” that has the highest score. That refers to the one who has the closest score to a 9. Here is a quick rundown:

1. Two hands of cards are dealt. Yours and the bankers.

2. You don’t have to bet on yourself. You can bet on the banker, or you can bet on whether it will be a tie (though this is often the worst choice).

3. Place your bets. Betting often starts at $100 when playing at a live casino, though this varies when playing baccarat online.

4. The dealer deals the cards face-up – two for you, two for the banker. The closest person to 9, wins.

Important to note here is that Aces are worth 1 point, numbered cards are equal to their value (5 = 5), and 10s and face cards have no value at all. You can’t have a score over 10. If your two cards are a 5 and a 7, with a score of 12, you add 1+2 for a total score of 3.

Baccarat Casino Terms You Need To Know

If you’re playing casino baccarat online and getting a little confused with all the “jargon”, it could be because many of the terms of the game are French and Italian (some are even Spanish). This is thanks to its colourful history, which we mentioned earlier. To help, here are some of the more confusing terms you might come across, and their meanings:

Baccarat Banque: A type of baccarat that is also known as "Baccarat à Deux Tableaux", which translates to Baccarat on Two Tables. This is played on a table that has up to 14 players, 7 on either side of the banker. Cards are shuffled by the croupier (dealer), then handed to players on the right who shuffle again, then those on the left who also shuffle. The last person to shuffle is the banker. Bets are placed. Three hands dealt: one for the left side of the table, one for the right, and one for the banker. All 7 (or so) people on the left side of the table are playing with the same cards, and same for the right side. So if the left side wins, all players on that side win. And so on.

“Go Bank”: is a term used in Baccarat Banque, whereby one half of the stake can be played upon a single hand, or a cheval – two separate hands.

Banco: This is a Spanish word meaning Banker. Depending on which version you are playing, you might find that the banker is also the dealer.

Baccarat Coup: The coup is for one complete round of baccarat casino; with three possible outcomes. The player wins, the banker wins or it will be a tie.

Burn card: This is a card that is removed from the deck after each shuffle and placed in the discard tray.

Chemin de Fer: The name of the game in France.

Down card: A card that is dealt face down.

Le grande: Also known as a “natural 9” – when you are dealt 9 in the first two cards.

La petite: A natural 8.

Dragon bet: a popular side bet, usually found in mini baccarat.

Bankroll: The total amount you intend to bet in the game.

Shoe: A device that holds playing cards when playing at a real casino. It holds up to eight decks.
